Arkansas' fastest growing city can keep growing. On Monday night, an alderwoman’s push for a six month moratorium on building new homes failed.
People packed Monday night’s Maumelle City Council meeting to raise their concerns with the proposal. Alderwoman Liz Adams had proposed the building moratorium to study traffic and infrastructure concerns. However, her motion did not find any support, failing 7-1 with Adams casting the lone “yes” vote.
About the proposal, fellow Alderman Burch Johnson said, “I can’t believe that this is even down on paper here.”
As an alternative to a moratorium, Maumelle has set aside $50,000 for a strategic plan. Another important fact brought up by one of the city’s engineers is that Maumelle’s original infrastructure was built to handle about 34,000 residents, or twice its current population.
Also in opposition to the moratorium was the Home Builders Association of Greater Little Rock. They noted that for each building permit issued, three permanent jobs are created.
